- Gift of Christmas
The Deer Park Volunteer Fire Department is currently involved in its annual Gift of Christmas Program that has been helping families during the holiday season since 1987. The entire program was birthed when former firefighter Al Workman had a vision to give out toys that had been dropped off at the fire station, specifically to families who were not able to provide their children with Christmas gifts. As the years passed, donations began growing and the Gift of Christmas program has evolved to its current state, where barrels are placed throughout the city at schools and local businesses for citizens to donate toys and canned goods.
In 2016 nearly 200 barrels were distributed throughout our community and the collection of food and toys was enormous, helping upwards of 60 families who are identified and selected via applications which are available at Station 3 and every DPISD school nurse's office. All of this happens solely through the combined efforts of businesses, schools, and numerous volunteers that deliver and pickup barrels, sort toys and canned goods, and deliver these generous gifts to the families. It is truly an amazing feat! Letters announcing this year's event have already been sent out to area businesses, surrounding industrial facilities, and DPISD schools. In the event you would like to have a donation barrel placed at your school or business, please use our barrel request form. As always, donations are still accepted at each fire station. "Big Al" would appreciate it!
